SRV record

5 Nov 2019

A SRV record specifies a host that supports a specific service. Simply put, if a user (application) send a request to access a specific service to the DNS server, in response it will receive a SRV record that contains the domain name and port number on which the service is running.

Format and parameters of SRV record

The SRV record has the following format:

_Service._Proto.Name TTL Priority Weight Port Target

And its parameters are:
Service: the service name such as SIP, IMAP, FTP, …
Proto: the transfer protocol that the service uses. It is usually TCP or UDP.
Name: the domain name that supports the service specified in the record. For instance: example.com
TTL: standard DNS time to live of the SRV record
Priority: if several SRV records are defined for a single service, priority determines which one should be checked on first. A lower value is more preferred. For example, assume that the following SRV records are defined for a service. In this example the first record is examined first.

_imaps._tcp.example.com 10 1 8080 exampledomain.com

_imaps._tcp.example.com 20 1 8080 exampledomain.com

Weight: when two SRV records have the same priority, the application uses weight to determine the more preferred record. Records with higher weights are more preferred.
Port: the port number that the specified service is running on.
Target: The host name of the system that the application must connect to, in order to access the service.

SRV record settings in user panel of ArvanCloud

In order to set up the SRV record

⦁ Go to User Panel -> Cloud DNS -> Records Management.
⦁ In DNS Settings panel, set the record type to SRV and title to something similar to the following:

@_service._proto.example.com.

⦁ Set the Port field to the port number that the service is running on.
⦁ Set the value to a string with the following format:
exampledomain.com
If you want to define more than one SRV record, you can use the priority and weight fields according to your needs.
exampledomain.com
